Summary

This year, the Coalition’s objectives were to develop media materials in three main Nigerian languages (Igbo, Hausa, and Yoruba) for use by the media, and to build media capacity on sanitation and hygiene issues. It held a materials development workshop for both print and electronic media and produced materials for publication and broadcast. The workshop explored key issues – the need for safe disposal of excreta, for hand washing at critical times, and disease transmission routes. Involving the media raised their understanding and secured their commitment, and visits to media owners and editors further reduced the cost of air-time.

About the author

The Federal Ministry of Water Resources established the National Task Group on Sanitation (NTGS), the acting national WASH coalition, in 2007. The NTGS brings together ministries and government agencies as well as NGOs, donors and representatives of civil society and the media.  The Coalition focuses on sanitation and hygiene promotion through advocacy, policy development, capacity building, and research. The Coalition also plays a role in strengthening decentralized coordination of sanitation work at state and local government levels.
