Summary

In 2010, the Sri Lanka Coalition established a water quality surveillance (WQS) system and water safety plans. This required raising awareness and strengthening laboratory facilities. Communities and authorities became aware of the quality of water they consumed and the types of preventive measures and further improvements required. The Coalition made a number of recommendations including guidance and encouragement of operators for continuous water quality improvements, sampling by an independent authority, household water treatment where system treatment is not feasible, and water safety plans to pave path for prevention of pollution.
