Summary

The Cambodia Rural Sanitation and Hygiene Improvement Programme (CR-SHIP or “Programme”), a five-year $5.09 million programme that is funded directly by the Global Sanitation Fund (GSF) of the Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC), aims to increase sustained access to improved sanitation and promote proper hygiene practices in rural communities of Cambodia. The Programme responds directly to issues in the sector described in the Country Sanitation Sector Analysis of 2009 and reiterated in the MRD RWSSH Strategy of 2010. The Programme will be implemented in the rural areas of the country where in 2008; only 23% had access to sanitation facilities. Specifically, CR-SHIP will target 5,600 villages in all districts in the provinces of Kampong Cham, Kampong Speu, Kandal, Svay Rieng, and Takeo where current sanitation coverage is below 50%, in the Plain and Plateau geographical regions of the country.

CR-SHIP has five components, namely: sanitation and hygiene promotion; capacity development; advocacy; monitoring and evaluation; and, the Programme coordinating mechanism and directly executed activities. Each component is designed to achieve GSF-prescribed programme outcomes. CR-SHIP components and activities fill in gaps in current government interventions in the sector and complements and scales-up interventions that have proven successful in addressing sector issues.
