Origins and rationale of network
The 1996 UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro and the informal adoption of the Dublin Principles established the basis for founding GWP by the World Bank, SIDA and UNDP. The regional networks started 1997 and the country water partnerships started to form a year later.
Objectives
The Global Water Partnership's vision is for a water secure world. The mission is to support the sustainable development and management of national water resources. Through the partnership countries become able to connect water resources planning and operations at different scales— transboundary, regional, basin, national and local—so that actions are coherent and sustainable.
