Origins and rationale of network
The Thematic Group has been by practitioners, donors, and researchers after a meeting in 2001 in Delhi to look more closely at issues of scaling up community managed rural water supplies. Having become inactive, it was decided in 2010 to submerge into Rural Water Supply Network.
Objectives
The thematic group focus on community managed water supply, principally in rural areas, within a livelihoods framework (sanitation, hygiene, food production, economic uses etc). It will identify and explore effective ways in which limited resources in the water sector can be used to serve the most people for the longest time in the quickest way.
"The group focuses on two challenges:
• ensuring that community water services are sustainable in the long term, which means that adequate institutional arrangements are in place to support community management; and
• finding ways to increase coverage from current “islands” of success to reach entire populations.
