Ms. Teresa Rehman, an Indian journalist who writes on issues relating to the common people of conflict-torn Northeast India, was finally presented with her WASH Media Awards diploma for having taken top honours in the English-language reporting category during the 2009-2010 awards competition.
She was honoured 29 June by WSSCC during the 2011 World Conference of Science Journalists by communications officer Dave Trouba. The WASH Media Awards recognize and support the crucial role of media in raising awareness of the importance of water, sanitation, and hygiene services.
Ms. Rehman received the award for journalistic excellence in her article "Sanitation in the times of floods." Because she was pregnant with her second child at the time, she was unable to come to Stockholm, Sweden, in August 2010, along with the other winners in that year's competition.
Congratulations to Teresa Rehman! At the links above, you can read Teresa's original winning article, as well as a recent report by her in a local newspaper in her native language of Assamese. A short video interview of her is below, as well as another interview done by TwoCircles.net here. In addition, she founded a Yahoo group dedicated specifically to journalists writing about sanitation and hygiene issues. You can read about that here.
Journalists interested in participating in the competition for the period of 2011-2012 can find more information and entry forms on the WASH Media Awards page.
