The South Indian city of Tiruchirapalli (or Trichy) is situated on the banks of the river Cauvery. Trichy lies approximately 325 km south from Chennai, the capital of the State of Tamil Nadu. With a population of 7,500,000, Trichy is the fourth largest city in Tamil Nadu. About 25 percent of the people live in slums.
WSSCC's Saskia Castelein visited colleagues in Trichy to view a wide spectrum of WATSAN projects ranging from ODF villages and slums, to financing mechanisms Most of the achievements were of relative recent date. However, the structure for sanitation provision used by Gramalaya, a big local NGO, set in motion the mentality change that goes hand in hand with the actual technical constructions. The involvement and commitment of women, who are most affected by a lack of sanitation, explains to a great extent the success of those WATSAN projects. The formula of community involvement and ownership clearly works and is probably the best way to have sustainable investments in this sector.
