Water sources are abundant in many upland communities in rural areas, particularly in the Bukidnon Province., home of the watersheds and famous for the scenic and historic Mount Kitanglad.
As we are nearing the target to meet Goal 7 of the Millenium Development Goal in 2015, it is unfortunate to note that only 46% of households have no access to formal water service.
The "Banga Pinoy" (Ferrocement tank) has been the most common medium of catchment and water storage in the rural areas. It's being used as a reservoir for gravity fed system with the springs and surface run-offs as sources. An initiative was also undertaken to use it in schools to provide water which is essential for both personal and sanitation hygiene.
With issues on climate change, human hazards and the willies of water scarcity, we need to uphold and advocate an integrated water management. For those who have more resources, preserve and protect what you have been blessed with. Manage water wisely. Avoid wastage.
