Summary

Burkina Faso is one of the poorest countries in the world, ranked 175 out of 177 by the United Nations. It is also in The Sahel, whose expansion has led to the slow demise of rainfall-dependent agricultural livelihoods in its rural areas.

This in turn has caused a steady rise of rural immigration to urban and peri-urban areas in the capital, Ouagadougou and other large urban areas, placing pressure on existing water supply and sanitation (WSS) systems as investments and the capacity to manage the systems fall behind. So how is the WSS sector coping?

This report examines the sector as a whole, mapping the framework, providers and key agencies, donor involvement and how they are all combining and performing to address Burkina Faso's problems and reach the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
