Summary

These documented cases have been compiled in completion of 15 months Ecological Sanitation Research Project implemented by Network for Water and Sanitation (NETWAS) Uganda as the ecosanres Uganda Knowledge Node with support from the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI). The project was part of an international and development program on ecological sanitation, with a mission to develop and promote pro- poor sustainable sanitation through capacity development and knowledge management.

WASH stakeholders in this document have shared their stories, messages from the field on Ecosan systems use and any other sustainable sanitation practice. These stories address the following themes:

  • Use of ecosan toilets and adoptability in both urban (public places, institutions etc), Rural- (homestead) and schools.
  • Operation and maintenance of the ecosan systems
  • Culture, attitudes and behaviours around ecosan systems
  • Re-use of the ecosan by Products in agriculture
  • Sanitation policies in Uganda
  • History of Ecosan concept in Uganda

NETWAS Uganda (Network for Water and Sanitation) is a local non- profit making organization that was registered in Uganda in 1996 to provide services in the water supply, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) sector. NETWAS Uganda is affiliated to NETWAS International, which is part of the international training network (ITN) for water and waste management.  It has been a partner of IRC since 2003 on resource centre functions and learning. NETWAS and IRC have implemented joint programs like  LeaPPS , PILS  a learning project that assists local government and NGOs to improve rural household and school sanitation and hygiene.; Building  National Capacities for Knowledge management and Learning in the WASH sector and good governance project in West Nile.Before 2003 NETWAS Ug and IRC jointly carried out several consultancies.

 

NETWAS delivers its work through four program areas that include: Capacity building, knowledge management, evidence based advocacy and organizational and institutional development and works from national level to grassroots level and both in urban and rural areas.  NETWAS currently hosts the Sanitation Water Alliance on behalf of an NGO Consortium to document and disseminate sector information & lessons learned – see also http://www.watsanuganda.watsan.net
