This planner’s guide is designed to provide materials for executing the first Global Handwashing Day on 15 October 2008. The guiding vision of Global Handwashing Day is a local and global culture of hand washing with soap. The challenge is to transform hand washing with soap from an abstract good idea into an automatic behaviour performed in homes, schools, and communities worldwide. Global Handwashing Day will be the centerpiece of a week of activities that will mobilize millions of people in more than 20 countries to wash their hands with soap. Overall, the event is designed to introduce the idea of Global Handwashing Day and being the process of yearly commemoration, shine a spotlight on the state of hand washing in each country, and raise awareness about the benefits of hand washing with soap.
The Public Private Partnership for Handwashing with Soap (PPPHW) works to make hand washing a common practice in homes, schools and communities worldwide. The PPPHW also seeks to promote awareness, build political commitment, and trigger action on this critical issue at local, national, and international levels. http://www.globalhandwashing.org/
