Menstrual hygiene is a much neglected issue within the water and sanitation sector and there are critical gaps in the body of evidence on menstrual hygiene, including a lack of systematic studies analyzing best practices in Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM).
In 2008, 59% of the population in Africa lacked access to improved sanitation facilities.Who are these people and why are they left out, not reached or not served? This synthesis paper, presented at AfricaSan 3, will highlight some of the challenges but also gives examples and a framwork how to reach more inclusive sanitation and hygiene in Africa.
Sanitation and Hygiene Practitioners' Workshops were held from 2007 to 2011 in various regions. This report highlights the commonalities and innovative thinking from them and presents key intervention strategies for urban and rural programming, financing, and monitoring in sanitation and hygiene.
