Water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) projects are usually low on the 'to-do' lists. But even this lack of priority can't explain the limited success or outright failure of even the best funded schemes. The old models have failed to deliver, while the new approaches need to be evolved to deliver better results. The United Nations recognizes this, and has mandated WSSCC with advocating the ‘WASH’ cause and working with its many partner organizations to help debate and define the new approaches that are needed. At the Kyoto Forum, WSSCC stated that to achieve this, there is a need for a wholesale strategic rethink for all WASH projects. This publication details the mistakes of the past that highlight the common features of failure, before mapping out the new agenda for progress. This is your reading material if you need to know how future success will be achieved.
The Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC) is a global multi-stakeholder partnership and membership organization that works to save lives and improve livelihoods. It does so by enhancing collaboration among sector agencies and professionals who are working to provide sanitation to the 2.6 billion people without a clean, safe toilet, and the 884 million people without affordable, clean drinking water close at hand. Through its work, WSSCC contributes to the broader goals of poverty eradication, health and environmental improvement, gender equality and long-term social and economic development. It has coalitions in 36 countries, members in more than 160 countries, and a Geneva-based Secretariat which is hosted by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS). www.wsscc.org
