Summary

WaterAid conducts an assessment of the national water sector in Nigeria. Overall, Nigeria faces major challenges in reaching its water and sanitation Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Though more resources are being allocated to water, these are still inadequate and there is no sanitation budget. Projects are frequently top-down without the participation needed for sustainability. However, there are many opportunities. The new debt deal means that more resources are available and good policies on both water and sanitation have been produced and require coordinated implementation.
