Plan strives to achieve lasting improvements in the quality of life of deprived children in developing countries through a process that unites people across cultures and adds meaning and value to their lives. Over two million children die each year from diseases caused by poor quality drinking water and inadequate sanitary facilities.
This report aims to position Plan’s approach to water and environmental sanitation within the context of the broader international development goals and within Plan’s own commitment to child centered community development.
The underlying theme of this report is that the long-term sustainability of water and environmental sanitation programmes is interrelated with and dependent on community development and institutional support.
Within the report, details of how this will be achieved are illustrated. The challenges to be met, the approaches taken, the outcomes, in all the areas around the globe that Plan operate in. Areas covered include: Access to safe water, depletion of water sources, environmental cleanliness, responding to disasters, hygiene behaviours and gender equity.
Addresses issues related to the WASH sector in a way understandable to both technical and non-technical staff, this report is especially relevant to anyone involved in child centered community development.
