Nigeria’s sanitation challenge is a Millennium Development Goal (MDG) target is to halve the proportion of people without sustainable access to basic sanitation by 2015. Currently, the country is not on track to meet this target. Programming for sanitation is guided primarily by the National Water-Sanitation Policy, the National Environmental Sanitation Policy, and a new Strategy for Scaling-Up Rural Sanitation. A new comprehensive National Water and Sanitation Policy is under development.
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is on the ground in over 150 countries and territories to help children survive and thrive, from early childhood through adolescence. The world’s largest provider of vaccines for developing countries, UNICEF supports child health and nutrition, good water and sanitation, quality basic education for all boys and girls, and the protection of children from violence, exploitation, and AIDS.
