Established by WSSCC in 2002, the WASH Media Awards encourage investigative reporting on water, sanitation and hygiene issues by developing country journalists from print, radio and TV media. The 2004 awards were announced at the first ever Global WASH Forum in Dakar, with an international panel of judges evaluated more than 100 entries from print, radio and TV journalists representing over 40 countries. The winning entry, “The Nile and its People” by Egyptian Nadia El-Awady, illustrated the impact of industrial pollution, sewage and solid waste management on people’s health and dignity along the River Nile. Here, we reproduce the article in full, along with all the other winning entries. Sit back and enjoy an inspiring and informative read that reveals personal feelings from around the developing world about water, sanitation and hygiene issues.
The Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC) is a global multi-stakeholder partnership and membership organization that works to save lives and improve livelihoods. It does so by enhancing collaboration among sector agencies and professionals who are working to provide sanitation to the 2.6 billion people without a clean, safe toilet, and the 884 million people without affordable, clean drinking water close at hand. Through its work, WSSCC contributes to the broader goals of poverty eradication, health and environmental improvement, gender equality and long-term social and economic development. It has coalitions in 36 countries, members in more than 160 countries, and a Geneva-based Secretariat which is hosted by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS). www.wsscc.org
