Summary

The aim of this brief for Burkina Faso is to emphasize that, beyond improving quality of life for citizens, access to sanitation and water will bring about tangible health, environmental, and economic benefits, as well as contribute to poverty reduction. Progress to achieve the sanitation target in Burkina Faso is off-track and even if targets are met, a significant part of the population will still be without access to improved sanitation. Various research studies show that investments in water and sanitation projects yield favourable economic returns while increasing the health of the country.

About the publisher

Sanitation and Water for All (SWA) is a global partnership aimed at achieving universal and sustainable access to sanitation and drinking-water for all, by firmly placing sanitation and water on the global agenda with an immediate focus on achieving the MDGs in the most off-track countries. SWA aims to address critical barriers to achieving universal and sustainable sanitation and drinking water for everyone. These barriers include insufficient political prioritization, weak sector capacity to develop and implement effective plans and strategies, and uncoordinated and inadequate investments. www.sanitationandwaterforall.org
