In 2019, the programme not only achieved its intended targets but surpassed them as 558 villages were certified ODF, translating into 391,870 people living in Open Defecation Free certified villages. The successes of KSHIP are attributable to an efficient programme structure working with the oversight of the Programme Coordination Mechanism, and monitoring support by the CPM as well as the day to day planning and technical review by a Technical Review Committee. Responsive, contextually applied behaviour change approaches on sanitation and hygiene contributes to the programme’s success.
Through inter-sectoral dialogue, technical guidance, content development, and capacity building to facilitate implementation approaches, we also assisted and secured the approval of a stand-alone, inclusive national Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) policy, which was approved in November 2019, marking the achievement of a big landmark.
KSHIP advocates for increased government funding to meet sanitation and hygiene goals.
This year, KSHIP is focusing on supporting county-level governments to increase activities beyond the sub-county level. A priority is to ensure that the principles of equality and non-discrimination are reflected in county policies, strategies, action plans and budgets.
