We are using our programme’s lessons and experiences to inform further sanitation and hygiene programming in the country as well as beyond, especially on integration of menstrual health and hygiene and equality and non-discrimination. Our engagement in the country included CLTS, promoting handwashing with soap, drinking water and environment management, the development of community funding mechanisms, sanitation marketing, as well as menstrual hygiene management.
Through its learning process, the programme has been able to support a range of innovations. These include elevating community CLTS and hygiene committees to larger, legally-recognized village development associations trained in financial and organizational management; helping Natural Leaders form departmental and municipal associations to best utilize their skills; and supporting the creation of micro-enterprises. In addition, women’s hygiene committees supported by the programme have led the production and marketing of soap.
Senegal was also one of the pilot countries under the Joint Programme on Gender, Sanitation and Hygiene, a project with UN Women that supported governments in the formulation of evidence-based and inclusive policies that address the fulfilment of women’s and girls’ human rights to water and sanitation. As a result, three new menstrual health and hygiene policies were adopted.
