In memory of distinguished WASH champion, the Hon. Maria Mutagamba

News

It is with great sadness that WSSCC notes the passing on 24th June of the Honorable Mrs. Maria Mutagamba, a leading WASH figure in Uganda and a long-serving member of WSSCC.

Her various roles in the Water, Hygiene and Sanitation (WASH) sector over the years accorded her the title “Mama WASH Africa” for her contributions to improve access to WASH through policy processes.

From 2011 to 2012 she was the Minister of Water and Environment in Uganda, and later became Minister of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities. She continued to a strong WASH advocate, also supporting WSSCC efforts in Uganda.

She worked closely with the Council’s National Coordinator, Jane Mulumba and was our distinguished guest during the National Consultation Meeting in August 2016 in Kampala, where she shared her vision of WSSCC in Africa with all participants.

We remember her touching testimony about her role with WSSCC:

“It was such an honour and privilege to know that as members, we are shaping the immediate future of a global organization. Membership offers us the opportunity to learn about what other countries are doing. This platform has also helped us gain access to professional networks in the WASH sector that we otherwise would not have had.”

The WASH sector, Africa and Uganda have lost a passionate, highly respected and influential member of society.

The Ugandan Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda refers to her passing as "a great loss to the country."

We send our heartfelt condolences to her family and close friends at this time.
