WSSCC members and partners marked Global Handwashing Day on October 15th to raise awareness and encourage people to wash their hands with soap. This year’s theme Our Hands our Future highlighted the importance of handwashing to ensure a healthy future for all.
Sheba Odondi, Learning and Communication Officer for WSSCC’s Kenya Sanitation and Hygiene Improvement Programme (K-SHIP) shared images of the National ‘Global Handwashing Day’ celebrations held at the Isinya Primary School in Kajiado County, with the Deputy Governor of the county, the Director of Public Health Kepha Ombacho , the Deputy Director of Public Health James Mwitari, UNICEF Chief of WASH Andrew Trevett, Amref Health Africa’s Ag Director of WASH and Neglected Tropical Diseases Daniel Kurao, and the CEC Health for the County, Esther Somoire. During his speech the governor said that access to soap in the county stands at 97%.
Other celebrations took place in Naivasha sub- county at the Lakeview primary school, Kwale County at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) in Msambweni Sub County, at the Ithanga Catholic Parish in Gatanga constituency,Muranga County, Wajir County at the Wajir Secondary Girls School, Suguta Market in Kisii County, in South Mugirango Sub County in the Getenga Ward, Kuria West Sub-County, Narok County.

United Purpose, the Executing Agency of the Global Sanitation Fund supported RUSHPIN Programme, partnered for the fourth year in a row with PZ Cussons to carry out Nigeria’s largest Global Handwashing Day Campaign. The month-long campaign featured creative and fun activities which empowered more than 3000 children to become ‘Hygiene Heroes’.

Longstanding WSSCC Member Roy Kunjappy shared images of the celebrations that took place in Kerala in 20 locations. Activities included demonstrations on handwashing , mass drill/flash mob, rallies, seminars and handwashing songs.

Our partner Sanitation and Water Action (SAWA) in collaboration with UNICEF and Kigamboni municipal council celebrated the day at Vijibweni primary school where SAWA is implementing a WASH programme funded by UNICEF.

The Chief Director in the Ministry of Health, Bester Chisamire, traditional leaders and development partners joined community members and pupils from different schools for celebrations at Chikombe Trading Centre in the Salima District. WSSCC trained Facilitators in Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM), including National Coordinator Ngabaghila Chatata and Hon. Jesse Kabwila a Member of Parliament for the area presented some of the teachings from the latest Training of Trainers in Kenya linking handwashing and good hygiene practices to MHM.
