Success stories from the inaugural Global Handwashing Day

The first-ever Global Handwashing Day, launched by the Public Private Partnership for Handwashing with Soap (PPPHW), was celebrated 15 October in over 70 countries and gained massive media coverage. In Madagascar the Ministers of Health, Education and Water were involved in school festivities, the latter having brought together over 10,000 pupils as well as their parents and teachers throughout the country.

In Ethiopia celebrations were organised by UNICEF, the Ethiopia WASH Movement and private sector partners, and set a precedent for collaboration among diverse stakeholders. A national launching event took place in Addis Ababa and 450 schools across the country raised the profile of school children as active promoters of handwashing with soap.
