WSSCC Executive Director Participates in Tajik-hosted International Year of Water Cooperation Conference


Chris WilliamsThis week the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan is hosting "Implementation of the International Year of Water Cooperation 2013", a conference that aims to promote dialogue and mutual understanding and to strengthen  partnership and cooperation on water issues among all stakeholders at all levels.

Priscilla AchakpaExecutive Director Chris Williams is representing WSSCC at the event. He will moderate the High Level Panel on Water Cooperation for Human Development, which features Irina Bokova, UNESCO Director General, as the keynote speaker. Mr. Sharif Rahimzoda, Tajik Minister of Economic Development and Trade, and Ms. Rebeca Grynspan, UNDP Associate Administrator, will  co-chair the panel.

The panel discussion will focus on how cooperation can be used to eradicate poverty, create social equity, achieve gender equality and further human development. The panel will explore the different paths towards water and sanitation cooperation, including transboundary coordination mechanisms, national campaigns, sub-national multi-stakeholder forums and alternative platforms led by civil society.

"The panel will consider how people living in poverty, women and historically excluded groups participate in these mechanisms and how inclusive cooperation can foster human development,” said Mr. Williams.

In addition, WSSCC's  National Coordinator for Nigeria, Priscilla Achakpa, will attend the week's Gender Forum, which will examine governance issues, common but differentiated responsibilities, and the specific roles of women. The Gender Forum will also showcase successes and failures of the Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) approach and harvest lessons learned on engaging women in water cooperation pilot projects.

The forum and conference take place in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, 19-21 August 2013.
