The holiday season is here, and we, as WSSCC members, have much to celebrate.

In order to strengthen grassroots advocacy, Tearfund and its local partner AEL organize regular workshops in communities in Liberia. The workshops target local authorities, youth, church- and community-based organizations (CBOs). One such workshop carried out in Tappita Statutory District Nimba County, Liberia, brought about change in one man’s life. Chester, a strong youth leader who in the past was involved in advocating for development projects in his community, had an encounter a couple of years ago that left him demoralized and no longer willing to carry out advocacy.

As a global language, English is useful, but to reach people locally, you have to speak with their tongue. For that reason, the National WASH Coalition in Nigeria, the National Task Group on Sanitation (NTGS), held a four-day advocacy materials translation workshop from 20 to 25 April in Jos, Nigeria, with WSSCC support.

The newest National WASH Coalition was officially launched in Cameroon on 5 May by His Excellency the Head of Government Inoni Ephraim at a ceremony that was also attended by WSSCC Executive Director Jon Lane.

Between December 2008 and February 2009, members around the world voted in elections for open seats on the WSSCC Steering Committee.

At least 51 million people continue to defecate in the open in Pakistan, and the cost of diarrhoea and typhoid equals 1.8 percent of the Gross Domestic Product, according to the Director General of the Environment, Javed Ali Khan, at the first national conference on sanitation, or PACOSAN, held in Islamabad on 28-29 May 2009.

And so it is, through the ‘Blue Book’ initiative — a process and report — launched by the International Secretariat for Water and supported by the National WASH Coalition.

The Global Sanitation Fund Advisory Committee, which supports the Secretariat’s GSF staff with the best and latest advice on sanitation and hygiene programmes at scale, met in Geneva 15-16 June and also welcomed a new member, Albert Wright.

Hakim Hadjel, Global Sanitation Fund Programme Officer, participated in the 34th WEDC Conference held from 18 to 22 May in Addis Abba, Ethiopia, under the aegis of a cross-cutting and timely theme of “Water, Sanitation and Hygiene: Sustainable Development and Multisectoral Approaches.”
