Realizing the Human Rights to Water and Sanitation

On 14 September 2018, the Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC) and Columbia University convened a side-event at the 39th session of the Human Rights Council (HRC). The event was hosted by the Permanent Missions of Germany, Niger and Spain to the United Nations in Geneva, and attended by the Special Rapporteur on the Human Right to Water and Sanitation who delivered the keynote speech. The session aimed to share best practices and key lessons on WASH policies and programmes that have successfully mainstreamed gender to reinforce evidence-based advocacy for sustainable access to sanitation provisions, including menstrual health for women, girls and forcibly displaced persons. The meeting’s conclusions informed deliberations of the Human Rights Council. The following report represents a synthesis of experts’ presentations and discussions.
